Today almost everyone has an electricity and gas connection. There is a network of cables between the energy source and the end user. Generating electricity is more and more being done in a sustainable way. Direct Current (DC) is generated by wind and solar energy. To make the energy use even cleaner, it is important to use locally generated energy, giving the energy network a more decentralized layout. A way to create these decentralized networks are microgrids.

Microgrids are self-contained energy grids that have a minimal connection to the higher level grid. This topology starts at your home or office building by coupling your own energy generation to your own consumption. Energy shortages or surpluses can be exchanged with the energy grid.

One level up, the same topology can be used with your neighbours were only the combined shortages or surpluses are exchanged with the higher level grid. This coupling of microgrids repeats up to the national grid.

Extra efficiency can be obtained by using a direct current (DC) connection instead of the commonly used alternating current (AC) connection. Sustainable energy facilities such as electric vehicles, heat pumps and solar panels already use DC. In order to be able to supply the electricity grid, DC is usually converted to AC by adding an extra conversion step. Conversion always leads to energy losses with a lower efficiency as a result. By connecting these facilities directly to the DC network, we save energy and improve efficiency.

The DC network facilitates various energy solutions – from solar panels to charging stations for electric vehicles – to optimize sustainability.
