JCT Traffic Signals Symposium and Exhibition, Nottingham UK, 16-18th September 2019

Dynniq were proud to be sponsors of the 24th JCT Traffic Signals Symposium in Nottingham, UK this year. The event consisted of a MOVA user group followed by a 2-day tradeshow. We had the opportunity to present three industry papers as well as collaborate with Atkins on a fourth paper. Read on to find out what we spoke about..

Strategy as a Service – presented by Simon Notely, Dynniq

This paper built on the work that Dynniq have done on the Eboracum Project in York, UK. The idea is to offer clients who don’t have the need or resources to run a system like ImCity the ability to use automated strategies linking signals, VMS, ANPR etc. Rather than selling them software, we would implement the strategy for them in our data centre and run it as a service, offering a simple web page to monitor how things are going.

2. Cooperative ITS trials in Bristol (Flourish) and Belgium (Intercor) – Presented by Alex Verploegh, Dynniq

Dynniq has performed its end-to-end C-ITS deployment trial for in-vehicle services in Belgium, demonstrating its advanced “Day 1 Services”. This was achieved by providing both mobile and G5 communications to and from infrastructure and included both security and signage messaging from central traffic management centres. The deployment proved interoperability between C-ITS hardware components, vehicles from different countries and through the two prominent communications methods.

3. It’s adaptive control, but not as we know it – Presented by Klass Rozema, Dynniq

This paper focused how a modern adaptive control algorithm such as ImFlow can provide benefits over traditional MOVA and SCOOT adaptive options by not only working with more forms of data input, but also provide more usable forms of data output for today’s new vehicles (and drivers via Apps) many of which are already set up for driving in the future.

4. Second Generation Ramp Metering (2GRM) – Presented by Dalia Suerio, Atkins and supported by Alan Hindley, Dynniq

This paper took a look into the evolving and enhancement of Traffic Management typically being deployed where the Urban and Inter-Urban networks meet. This raised discussions around the enhancements in the technology to support easier installation and maintenance of these systems.

Second generation ramp metering introduces several improvements and enhanced functionality, including:

  • Use of a hosted system architecture, allowing for more complex algorithms
  • Introduction of new algorithms which adapt more efficiently to traffic conditions
  • Flexibility to easily deploy and test new algorithms, future-proofing the system
  • Capability for data sharing with third party systems through cloud technology
  • Capability to influence adjacent ramp metering sites using centralised intelligence
  • Less dependent existing infrastructure, with flexibility on type of sensors to be used
