New lighting for the Erasmus Bridge
The Erasmus Bridge: A Rotterdam landmark, a symbol of the city and the bridge where all the tourists want to take photos. This prestigious bridge celebrated its 20th birthday in 2016, an excellent moment to replace the bridge lighting.
In collaboration with Industrielicht, Dynniq offered a plan to replace all lighting with LED. Part of the replacement plan was a light test whereby the municipality and the architect could assess whether the result met the expectations. LED lighting creates a different look and atmosphere than the current lighting, and the original lighting was part of the design by Ben van Berkel of UNStudio. The image of the bridge with the new lighting had to correspond with the original lighting plan as much as possible.
The lighting in the pylon and the stays of the bridge, the lights above the traffic lanes, and the decorative lighting along the underside of the bridge have all been replaced by LED lights.
The daily lighting is white but can be coloured for special events. The lighting is operated remotely from a control room.
The energy use of the bridge has been reduced by approximately 70 percent. This is a huge gain for the city, but also for the environment. A spectacular light show marked the launch of the new lighting on the Erasmus Bridge. The municipality can change the lighting of the entire bridge at the push of a button. The bridge can, for instance, show red, white, and blue lighting on King’s Day, or the Feyenoord club colours to celebrate a win. All colours of the rainbow are possible!
