Smart innovation always gives emergency services green light
PRESS RELEASE – Dynniq and KPN present invention that prevents accidents and saves lives
Eindhoven, 3 June 2019 – Dynniq’s innovative ‘GreenFlow for BlueLights’ invention automatically switches traffic lights to green for emergency service vehicles in Helmond. This was announced by Dynniq and its partner KPN this morning at the ITS European Congress in Eindhoven. This smart innovation will help to reduce traffic accidents involving priority vehicles (belonging to e.g. emergency services) and allow them to reach their destination faster and more safely in Helmond.
GreenFlow for BlueLights
With one press of the button, the clients – namely, the province of Noord-Brabant and the municipality of Helmond – and technology partners Dynniq and KPN kick-started a major pilot project that gives right of way to emergency service vehicles (ambulance, fire brigade, police and highway agencies) at junctions within the municipality of Helmond. This pilot project is part of a national initiative to roll-out priority protocols under the Talking Traffic partnership. Thanks to the ‘GreenFlow for BlueLights’ technology developed by Dynniq, as well as the KPN Data Services Hub developed by KPN, on-call emergency services will be able to communicate with traffic lights they encounter on their route. They will be recognised as priority vehicles and given right of way upon request, so they can navigate junctions without being hindered.
Innovation that prevents accidents and casualties
A total of 148 accidents involving emergency vehicles took place in 2016 and 2017*. Most accidents (25%) involving emergency vehicles occur at junctions featuring traffic lights within built-up areas, after emergency vehicles have encountered a red light and other motorists have encountered a green light. Quite a few risks are encountered when driving an emergency vehicle. Because normal traffic rules are not followed, it is more difficult for other road users to predict at how emergency service vehicles will behave, which can result in accidents and casualties.

Uniting parties in an open ecosystem

The KPN Data Services Hub helps us to support organisations so they can share their data in a safe and scalable manner. But the issue also requires real-time data coordination. The future of mobility
Elly Blanksma-van den Heuvel, Lord Mayor of the municipality of Helmond: “In the Brainport region, you can already see in which direction the future of mobility is heading. Helmond is dedicated to innovative technologies and smart mobility. We are thus pleased to be part of this pilot, which will help to improve road safety in our city when emergency services are called out.”

The GreenFlow pilot in the Brainport region is also in keeping with the image of Noord-Brabant, where we like to put innovations into practice. As a result, we can further improve our knowledge so innovations can later be implemented on a larger scale. This means working together to improve comfort and safety for all road users.”
In 2016 and 2017, accidents involving emergency vehicles resulted in 1 death and 67 casualties, which included 22 emergency workers and 46 other road users. Ambulances were involved in 55 accidents; police vehicles in 63 accidents and fire brigade vehicles in 27 accidents (*source: Accident statistics emergency vehicles 2016-2017 from the Knowledge centre for Emergency vehicles at the IFV).
